What We Believe

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” - St. Augustine

Within historical, orthodox Christianity, there is a core of essential, agreed beliefs that unite Christians across the world and across the ages. These beliefs are unchanging and critical to our understanding of faith. But there are also a wide range of other beliefs that describe the specific spiritual experiences of faithful Christians in a variety of traditions and denominations. While these are important, they are not foundational to basic Christian faith. At Newbridge Church, we have decided to unite around what we believe are the essentials, realizing that there will be a variety of convictions around other issues of doctrine & practice, and we are committed to giving and receiving grace with each other in these differences.

We believe in one God- the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures- the Bible- are given by divine, plenary, and unique inspiration by God unlike any other writings. We believe the Bible is authoritative above all other sources, and contains all truth necessary for faith and Christian living.

We believe that humankind is created in the image of God, unique amongst all creatures, but is born with a fallen nature, is corrupted, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.

We believe that salvation is through Jesus Christ, and Christ alone, who is the Son of God and Savior of the world. It is for the whole human race; and that whoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is saved from the dominion of sin and for an eternity with God. This act of salvation is a gift of God received by grace alone and through faith alone- apart from any human merit or striving.

We believe that the Holy Spirit bears witness to salvation in the lives of believers and is both active and effective- by breaking sin’s sway in sanctification, imparting spiritual gifts, and bearing spiritual fruit in their lives.

We believe that the Church is comprised of believers who are called out and called together by God- a new community. The mission of the Church in the world is to partner in the redemptive, reconciling and restorative work of Christ by proclaiming and living Gospel reality.

We believe that Jesus Christ will one day return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.

We believe that people were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with God because of Jesus Christ’s saving work is eternal life in Heaven.

Newbridge Church was planted out of The Bridge Church LI and is affiliated with the Church Of The Nazarene.
